The seemingly-never-ending goodbye to the Spectrum finally started coming to an end Tuesday when the first wrecking ball tried really, really hard to break the facade of the aged arena.

That part was pretty comical. It took about a minute of bashing before any real dust started to fall.

So many games, so many shows ... so many SHOWS! I like to remember it with this one

http://www.archive.org/details/gd82-04-06.sbd-patched.wiley.16785.sbeok.shnf

the sticky floors, the twirling shadows up on the concourse, the huddled, sweaty, quivering masses yearning to pee ...
Jerry owned that sardine can (well, actually Mr. Snider owned it, but Jerry and the boys sub-leased it brilliantly for hours at a time).

That place is like a shrine - sorry to see it go ...

I drove thru the snow from Jersey for that April 1982 show - down the white streets filled with warehouses and empty lots toward that palace in the wasteland...

The beauty of JFK Stadium was that you didn't have to wait for a wrecking ball to take a chunk of the place home with you, it just fell on your head!

Pretty ironic as the year the building opened, part of the roof blew off. The Flyers had to go play some home games in Quebec while the place was being repaired.

I loved that place. Aside from numerous Flyers and Sixers games and concerts (my favorite was probably Peter Gabriel in 1982 and i am sure that my hearing impairment issues began there with AC/DC in 1981), I recall going there to see things like the circus when i was a kid. Having not lived in Philly since '86 i haven't been to all those new places. I am sure they have more creature comforts than the old buildings (a sewer grate has more creature comforts that JFK did) but i doubt they have anywhere near the character. C'mon, how can you have a football stadium without a courthouse and jail?

I'm still in the Philly area Elb.
Rest assured you are not missing anything by not having been in any of these new places. I too, have seen many events at the Spectrum. From the circus, wrasslin', ice shows, sixers, flyers, concerts, to the circus that was a Dead show. While the new places do have all the "creature comforts" as you say, they can never match the atmosphere and experience that happened at the old place. I for one will greatly miss that place. I heard a guy on the radio say that he asked a Philly fan what do they do when there's no sports going on. His response: "We go to the airport and boo late arrivals".

Anybody notice "Hunter Roberts" on the right of the screen? At some points in the vid the "s" is missing and it just says Hunter Robert...just coincidence? Sure...but an appropriately strange one

Yes I saw the wrecking ball hit the the place. They should implode it. The Dead shows there I saw were very good and have no complaints, but as before I did have that terrible experience w/ the Cream in the round show which we talked about already.
